That's why whenever there's a new milk tea shop in the corner, you can expect Filipinos lining up to join the fun.

But did you know that TV personality and former basketball athlete Chris Tiu was one of the pioneers in bringing our favorite drink in the country?

According to Chris, the light bulb came to him during one of his trips abroad.

“Madalas akong bumabiyahe, sa Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Canada, and I noticed that there's this whole craze for bubble tea.”

The “bubble” in bubble tea refers to the tapioca balls (also known as pearls or boba) used as sinkers in the popular tea drink.

He adds, “It's an experiential thing na nakita ko na nagiging patok doon and nagiging uso sa bansang 'yun.

“So naisip namin, 'Parang puwede ito sa mga Pinoy.'”

Over the last decade, milk teas have definitely evolved from a simple combination of tea, milk, and sugar, to a few additions like pudding, brown sugar, nata de coco, and rock salt were added to cater to the sweet tooth of Filipinos.
