StarStruck 1 First Princess Yasmien Kurdi has all the right reasons to be proud of her career. After the successful run of Sine Novela’s remake of the film Pati ba Pintig ng Puso where she portrayed Jenna, she now stars in another Sharon Cuneta hit – and proves she deserves to be a drama princess. Text by Jessa Ericka C. Bien Interviewed by Alula Love dela Cruz Photos by Mitch S. Mauricio Yasmien conquers the afternoon drama scene once more as she takes on Pasan Ko ang Daigdig and gives life to Guadalupe Velez – a poor, ordinary young woman of the Payatas dumpsite who has an exceptional dream of becoming an adored singer. Through hard work and luck, she eventually reaches her life’s aspirations, though she is forced to choose between her budding career and her life-long friends, Carding ( JC de Vera ) and Luming (Alessandra de Rossi ). Interestingly, the drama princess says she relates to Lupe more as compared to her previous roles. “May similarities itong role ko na ito sa ugali ko, which is (being a) fighter, palaban sa buhay” she observes. “Grabe iyong fighting spirit niya na maiahon ko 'yung sarili ko sa hirap at determinado siya sa gusto niya.” Take Two As the teen star takes over the Mega Star’s former role, she sees to it “to make her own version” of the character. Incidentally, giving justice to her character becomes easier as there are more new and interesting twists in the story. “Nagkataon lang talaga na iba 'yung flow ng story namin. Naiba 'yung version dahil iba 'yung situations. Ang OA (over-acting) naman kung gagayahin ko 'yung same act niya eh differenet naman 'yung situation.” Working with her current on-screen love interest, JC de Vera, for the second time around proved advantageous for Yasmien. “We’re trying our best sa lahat ng roles na ginagampanan namin (kaya) sana magustuhan (ng mga tao)” she says. Being with the acclaimed director Joel Lamangan also has its perks, especially when he acknowledges their acting prowess. “Siyempre we’re happy and very flattered especially kung nag-a-act ako tapos biglang gaganoon iyon, ‘very good, very good’. I mean, everybody thought na terror or nakakatakot si Direk Joel, (pero) mabait (siya) talaga” she shares. “Yah, nakakatakot siya at times (pero) nasa lugar naman kasi” she continues. “(Basta) just always listen to him (and) wala kang magiging problema sa kanya basta sinunod mo lang utos niya” she adds. Loving the Challenge Already used to portraying mature roles at her young age, Yasmien says “masaya rin kapag may challenge ang work kasi minsan nakaka-bore din kapag paulit-ulit 'yung ginagawa mo.” Ready for whatever challenge her future characters may bring, she says: “I accept all kinds of roles naman, hindi naman ako namimili. Pero mas maganda pag iba-iba!” Catch Yasmien weekday afternoons in Pasan Ko ang Daigdig and tell other people what you think about her in the forums! Feel the fun with Yas through Fanatxt!
