If it isn’t trending, some say it isn’t happening.
These days, news becomes bigger news if it makes it to social media. An event becomes spectacular when it goes viral. And with the Filipinos’ increasing habit of going online, it’s no surprise that the Philippines was ranked one of the biggest consumers of social networking sites in the world.
This year, news from the Philippines went viral on sites like Youtube and Facebook and even trended on Twitter. With the emergence of different online platforms, the influence of the cyber world cannot be denied. Filipinos use, participate in and consume various manifestations of social media: from citizen journalism, to sharing photos and videos, to expressing reactions and comments on different issues and events.
With social media, everyone has a say. And this December, GMA News and Public Affairs gives Filipino viewers a chance to click, vote and voice out their opinion on who they think are the biggest newsmakers of the year. In “TRENDING: 2011”, GMA’s interactive yearend special, the audience selects the biggest stories and events that made headlines through online polling.
Beginning today , the public may vote using their Facebook and/or their Twitter accounts or vote online by visiting www.gmanetwork.com/trending 2011.
