GMA Kapuso Foundation (GMAKF), the socio-civic arm of GMA Network, conducted another round of relief distribution in Maguindanao last May 30 until June 3, in response to the continuing food shortage in the area. 20,000 individuals were served by the GMAKF team in the municipalities of Datu Hoffer Ampatuan, Rajah Buayan and Talayan.

The entire GMAKF team worked together for this relief operation. In spite the bulk of daily tasks and on-going projects, each GMAKF employee took time and effort to repack a significant number of goods for our brothers and sisters in Mindanao. The deployed GMAKF team proceeded with their duty despite the absence of an army escort. They also distributed in areas that were a few kilometers away from the “Maguindanao massacre” site, which happened in 2009, and the site of the “Mamasapano clash” which took the life of 44 Special Action Force members or also known as, SAF 44.

“It was a not a time to think about fear or cultural differences. In times of calamity, our innate compassion as Filipinos unite us,” said Jerome Abad, a GMAKF project staff.

For the past months, El Niño has persistently affected various part of our country – leaving many Filipinos with scarcity in food and limited access to water.

Earlier this year, citizens in some areas in Mindanao have resorted to eating tiki-tiki, crushed corn kernels, and kayos, a poisonous wild crop. It takes cautious and thorough preparation to get rid of the toxins of kayos to prevent incidents of poisoning and dizziness. Some families had to sell their carabaos and other farm animals in order to have food.

Last February, GMAKF was among the first to provide relief assistance in Maguindanao through its Operation Bayanihan project by distributing relief packs to 12,000 individuals and conducting soup kitchen for 250 children.

In spite of the downpour of rain every now and then, the people and agriculture of Maguindanao are yet to recover. The crops, in which they depend on for food and income, will still consume a great amount of time and hard work to be grown for harvest.

With this, the Foundation saw the need to extend assistance anew to the thousands of farming families affected by the continuous famine in Maguindanao.

For this particular cause, GMAKF is now accepting rice, noodles, canned goods, coffee, and sugar. Interested parties may drop off their donations at the GMA Kapuso Foundation office, 2nd floor, Kapuso Center, GMA Network Drive cor. Samar St., Diliman, Quezon City, weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Monetary donations may also be deposited to any branch of Metrobank, UCPB, PNB and Cebuana Lhuiller. No service fee will be deducted from donations made to GMA Kapuso Foundation.
