GMA Kapuso Foundation launches long-term rehabilitation projects for selected areas in Iligan. In the wake of Typhoon Sendong, GMA Kapuso Foundation (GMAKF), GMA Network, Inc.'s socio-civic arm, goes beyond relief assistance with its long-term rehabilitation program for selected areas in Iligan City.
In particular, the Foundation, in collaboration with the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Iligan, recently held a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the Kapuso Village in Mandulog, Iligan City.
The project, which will soon rise on a 3-hectare lot donated by the LGU, aims to build 200 houses for families displaced by typhoon Sendong.
The site was chosen based on the standards set by the LGU that is to relocate the chosen beneficiaries to a place near their original residence, provided that it is declared suitable for permanent relocation by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). Such condition, according to the LGU, is necessary to lessen adaptation concerns including livelihood and ancestral domain.
The ceremony was attended by GMAKF Executive Vice President Mel C. Tiangco, Iligan City Mayor Lawrence LL. Cruz, Regional Director of the Department of Public Works and Highways Region XI Engr. Norma U. Gironella, Asst. General Manager of the National Housing Authority Region X Froilan M. Kampitan, and Head of Task Force on Housing and Resettlement , Reynaldo Roque.
The GMAKF and the Iligan City government agreed to jointly mobilize their respective resources and networks of volunteers and benefactors to ensure the completion of the housing project, and the inclusion of basic community facilities.
Aside from which, GMAKF is also set to construct a water facility in Sitio Cabaro, a predominantly Muslim community and the second hardest-hit barangay in Iligan. The huge population of Muslims in the area gives GMAKF all the more reason to build a water facility in the area which plays a vital role in practicing their religion.
GMAKF committed to provide water supply through a deep-well electric water pump complete with a service shed .
Being every Filipino's Kapusong Totoo, GMA Kapuso Foundation stands by its belief that a truly sustainable project is one that nurtures a sense of ownership among recipients, donors, and volunteers.
