State seismologists on Tuesday morning reported more than 700 aftershocks from Monday's magnitude-6.9 quake that struck the Visayas, and warned of more possible aftershocks in the coming weeks. As many as 43 have died in the earthquake, many of them from landslides and collapsing walls and buildings. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology advised residents not to panic when an aftershock occurs, and urged them instead to secure items in their homes that can fall on them. It also said residents should not immediately return to structures that have sustained visible damage.

A powerful quake that hit central Philippines around noon Monday killed at least 43 people and caused widespread panic as aftershocks and rumors of a tsunami spread among the populace and rampant looting was reported in Negros Oriental province. Those who were killed were crushed by collapsing buildings, others were buried by landslides, according to the military.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) raised a tsunami alert in the Visayas after a magnitude-6.9 quake hit the area before noon on Monday, killing one child. Tsunami alert level 2 is good for about two hours. Phivolcs seismology division officer-in-charge Ishmael Narag said the waves are not likely to exceed one meter in height and that there was no need to evacuate homes.
