Two Filipino boxers and the men's tennis doubles pair qualified for the quarterfinals of their respective events on Friday to keep the Philippines' hopes for a gold medal in the Asian Games alive.

Mario Fernandez won via unanimous decision over Nepal's Puran Rai in the men's bantamweight division, while Charly Suarez escaped India's Akhil Kumar in the men's lightweight via split decision.

Suarez will battle Iraq's Ammar Jabbar Hasan Hasan on Monday for a spot in the semifinals, while Fernandez will exchange hostilities with Shiva Thapa of India on Tuesday.

Other boxers Mark Anthony Barriga, Ian Clark Bautista, and Wilfredo Lopez are also hoping to get into the quarters as they battle through their respective fights in the round of 16.

In tennis, Treat Huey and Ruben Gonzales Jr. barged into the quarterfinals of the men's doubles, beating Macau's Chi Neng Chan and Ho Tin Marco Leung, 6-0, 6-3.

They have to get through the South Korean pair of Yongkyu Lim and Hyeon Chung on Saturday qualify for the semifinal round.

The men's doubles remains as the only tennis event the Philippines could hope for a medal, as the mixed doubles pair of Huey-Denise Dy and Gonzales-Melissa Lehnert both fell to Thai rivals. — JST, GMA News
