Asian Games: Gilas remains alive for semis after Kazakhstan win vs Qatar
September 27, 2014 10:36pm
The Gilas Pilipinas national team received a great gift on Saturday night, remaining alive for a berth in the semifinals of the Asian Games basketball tournament after Kazakhstan won over Qatar, 65-57.

The left the Philippines with a slim chance to enter the next round as Gilas is scheduled to play Kazakhstan on Sunday.

However, two things need to happen for Gilas to advance.

The Philippines needs to beat Kazakhstan by double figures to end up with a better quotient in case of a three-way tie along with Qatar.

South Korea would then need to defeat Qatar in the nightcap on Sunday to send the Gulf nation into the three-way tie.

The development is a chance for redemption for the Philippine team, which was highly-fancied heading into the tournament before losing its last three games, including its two quarterfinals assignments to Qatar and South Korea so far. Controversy has also rocked the team, with naturalized center Marcus Douthit riding the bench in Saturday's tight defeat to South Korea. — JST, GMA News
