UPLB to hold 1st Southern Tagalog Arts Festival

Propelled primarily by the mandate of the UPLB Office of Initiatives in Culture and the Arts to conserve, promote the region’s cultural and artistic expressions and to encourage the continued development of a pluralistic Filipino culture, the 1st Southern Tagalog Arts Festival will be a celebratory showcase to assert the role of the region not only in the context of the Philippine artistic landscape, but ultimately the globalized arena as well.

The festival carries with it the pride of not only the University’s, but its immediate area of influence, as it enjoin practitioners, scholars, students, local government agencies and the general population alike towards the recognition of the role of the arts in everyday life. As a showcase of homegrown artistry, this festival aims to strengthen the belief that art does not simply operate on the notion that limit its definition as but the mere material expression of humanity’s social life and the recognition, appreciation of the same, but of art as precisely that which shape society.

The 1st Southern Tagalog Arts Festival is a month-long celebration that coincides with the observance of the country’s National Arts Month of February 2012. This festival will also reflect the UPLB OICA’s position of inclusivity in celebration of a pluralistic and dynamic Filipino culture. Participants to the 1st Southern Tagalog Arts Festival are categorized accordingly:

Biswal- the visual arts (drawing, painting, printmaking, etc.)
Lilok- the plastic arts (sculpture, pottery/ceramics, etc.)
Balay- the applied arts (weaving, embroidery, fashion design, interior design, architecture, etc.)
Sulat- written works (poetry, prose, academic research, etc.)
Tanghal- the performative arts (theatre, music, dance, oral traditions, rituals and other expressions of belief, etc.)
Usbong- new media art forms (film, video, photography, graphic design, digital art, etc.)

The festival will open with the first Southern Tagalog Studies Conference to highlight the scholarly study of the local historical and cultural heritage as recognition of the region’s contribution to Philippine culture and the arts.

As no other show of such magnitude has been staged that endeavors to unite the region, the 1st Southern Tagalog Arts Festival will serve as a venue to represent the best of the best not only in the field associated with the classical art forms (literature, painting, sculpture, architecture, music, dance and theater), but also—and perhaps of more import—the folk arts such as weaving, carving and embroidery to name a few, rituals and other expressions of belief and of course, contemporary art forms borne of new technologies like digital photography, computer animation and multimedia art forms among others that play an important part in redefining ideals of an autochthonous culture towards a variable, ever-changing one.
