UPLB to host the Luzon-wide debate competition


A few months before the National Debate Championship, The Parliament: University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) Debate Society will host the 4th installment of the Luzon Intervarsity (LIV) Tournament. The tournament is a three-day Luzon-wide debate competition that begins this September 15.
 
The competition will gather 108 debate teams, and 104 adjudicators from over 20 educational institutions, including University of the Philippines-Diliman (UPD), University of the Philippines-Manila (UPM), University of the Philippines -Los Banos (UPLB), University of the Philippines-Baguio, Ateneo De Manila University (ADMU), Ateneo De Naga University, De La Salle University (DLSU), De La Salle University - Lipa, College of Saint Benilde, Far Eastern University (FEU), University of Sto. Tomas, Mapua Institute of Technology, San Beda College, Saint Louis University, University of Cordilleras, Bulacan State University, Lyceum of the Philippines University Manila, Miriam College, Polytechnic University of the Philippines, and Rizal Technological University.
 
According to Tournament Director Steffi Allison Villa, the competition aims to continuously provide a competitive arena for Philippine debate institutions.
 
“Debating plays a crucial role in social awareness and participation. It helps promote a less apathetic environment through providing an avenue for intellectual discourse,” Villa told GMA News Online in a phone interview.
 
The competition, formerly called the U.P. Intervarsity Debate League, will also include composite teams across Asia. It will use the British Parliamentary format.
 
The members of the Adjudication Core of the 4th Luzon Intervarsity Tournament include Ely Zosa (ADMU), Pearl Simbulan (UPD), Marq Devoma (UPLB), Ayn Gayares (UPM), Julian Bautista (DLSU) and Marco Sana (FEU). — DVM, GMA News
