PUP presents first Gawad Hiyas Awards to its top laboratory high school alumni


As part of its Diamond Jubilee Celebration, the Polytechnic University of the Philippines–Laboratory High School (PUP LHS) recently recognized some of its outstanding alumni for their remarkable achievements and valuable contributions to our country.
 
Through the first “Gawad Hiyas: Professional Achievement Awards”, PUP President Dr. Emanuel C. De Guzman acknowledged the contributions and accomplishments of some of the best and the brightest in our country, which included a former Department Secretary, a renowned TV and movie director, a former national bank president, a women’s rights activist, a housing developer, a missionary, an innovator, and a scientist/agriculturist.
 
Former Secretary Celia C. Yangco of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) was given the Gawad Hiyas for Public Service for her untiring effort in serving the needs of the Filipino. On the other hand, the well-respected TV and movie director Lamberto “Bert” L. De Leon was acknowledged for his outstanding achievements and contributions in the field of mass media.
 
Former Philippine Veterans Bank president Joey A. Bermudez, who retired last October 31, was recognized for his outstanding achievements and contributions in the field of banking and finance.  
 
Former Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) chair Antonieta Fortuna-Ibe was given tribute for her stewardship in institutionalizing reforms and raising standards of the professional regulatory body. An incumbent commissioner of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Fortuna-Ibe was the first woman chair of the PRC.
 
Women’s rights activist and UNESCO Chair awardee Jo Enrica Enriquez-Rosales of DZRH received the Gawad Hiyas for her fight for the rights of abused women and children. Likewise, Sr. Eusebia D. R. Talastas, RSCJ, an international teacher and missionary was given an award for her unwavering passion in teaching and mentoring the youth in the Philippines and in various countries.
 
On the other hand, Thelma Magno-Humphries, the founder of US-based pharmaceutical company Magno-Humphries Laboratories, Inc. was cited for making a niche in the pharmaceutical industry. UPLB professor and agriculturist at the PCARRD-DOST, Dr. Perlita A. Nuevo also got an award for her achievements, contributions and innovations in the field of agriculture.
 
The former president of the Subdivision and Housing Developers Association of the Philippines (SHDA) Noel S. Gonzales was given an award for his outstanding achievements in business and real estate. Rotarian and philanthropist, Reynaldo P. Garcia was likewise awarded a Gawad Hiyas for his contribution in socio-civic works projects for the less fortunate and scholarship program for the PUP LHS.
 
Meanwhile, the members of the Philippine College of Commerce (PCC) High School Class of 1963 were given the Alumni Group Award for their unwavering support to PUP LHS through their scholarship programs, book donations, seminar sponsorships for students and faculty, and its annual commencement exercises.
 
The Gawad Hiyas awardees were nominated based on their outstanding professional and personal successes, as well as involvement and influences in socio-civic, ecological, cultural, or charitable activities.
 
Established in 1954 during the PCC era, the PUP LHS academic program focuses on discipline, academic excellence, nationalism and commerce.
