2017 Mid-year Enrichment Conference for US Fulbrighters in Southeast Asia

Forty-five (45) American scholars coming from member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Timor-Leste will be presenting their work in this year’s mid-year enrichment conference for US Fulbrighters in Southeast Asia on March 15 to 16.

The two-day event at Makati Shangri-La will be hosted by the Philippine-American Educational Foundation, also known as the Fulbright Commission in the Philippines.

Under the theme “Scholarship for Global Change: Transcending Academic Boundaries in the 21st Century,” the scholars’ research aim to promote better understanding of relations between the United States and ASEAN member nations.

Their works also encourage a greater awareness and knowledge of several issues that Southeast Asian nations face today.

Covering a broad range of topics on agriculture, social sciences, arts and global issues, the Fulbright grantees will explore diverse perspectives, from sustainable solutions for improving hospital wastewater management in Indonesia, the electrification plan in Myanmar, to electoral politics and public schooling in Cambodia.

Twelve American scholars in the Philippines will also share their work, including the vernacular histories and protests during the Marcos regime, the defense diplomacy in US-Philippine relations and the impact of globalization on indigenous artisan communities in the country.

The program will also feature cultural immersions for the participants. US Ambassador Sung Kim will deliver a keynote speech to formally open the conference on Wednesday.

The Fulbright program was created in the aftermath of World War II through the efforts of former US Senator J. William Fulbright, who believed that it can be a vehicle for mutual understanding with the promotion of peace and understanding through educational exchange. This year’s conference will be held with support from the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the US Department of State.
