'LGBT+ in Tech' celebrates Filipino diversity in innovation

Career expectations on lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people in the Philippines are often limited to a few stereotypes. People of non-heterosexual sexual orientation, gender identity and expression (SOGIE) can remain invisible in engineering, computer science, and other technology-related industries.

LGBT+ in Tech is a gathering of Filipino LGBTs working in the fields of technology. It aims to bring together Filipino tech innovators of various SOGIE. This gathering includes discussions on the LGBT+ experience in the workplace as well issues facing LGBT+ people in industries struggling with gender diversity.

"As a gay man in tech, I feel that I owe it to Alan Turing to live openly and represent that we exist and have always existed in this industry," according to Mark Lacsamana, one of the organizers  of the tech meet-up who holds the World War II hero as his personal hero.. Alan Turing, a British mathematician and computer scientist, is widely considered to be the father of theoretical computer science and artificial intelligence.

"There is a career in innovation for any young gay kid growing up," furthers Lacsamana. "You don't need to be contained in the idea that you can only be an 'artiste' or an 'entertainer'."

A network of LGBT+ leaders in different fields of technology creates a support group of peers within the industry. The same network also allows for mentoring of young LGBT+ people starting a career in technology.

LGBT+ in Tech will have its first gathering on May 13, 2017, from 2PM to 6PM at Uno Morato in Quezon City. The event is free and open to all LGBT+ people and LGBT+ allies.
