Batangas coastal cleanup organized in Sitio Kayreyna

The US Embassy in the Philippines, in coordination with De La Salle University’s Br. Alfred Shields FSC Ocean Research (SHORE) Center, Conservation International (CI) Philippines, and the local government of Lian, Batangas, organized a coastal clean up last June 6 at DLSU’s partner community in Sitio Kayreyna.

The embassy invited international expert on solid waste and environmental engineer Dr. Jenna Jambeck from the University of Georgia to visit the Philippines and learn more about the country’s current problem in marine debris, particularly plastic.

The Philippines is said to be the third in the list of countries with the most ocean plastic debris.

After the clean up, Jambeck, SHORE Center Director Dr. Emmanuel Garcia, and representatives from CI Philippines and the local government, brought the residents of Sitio Kayreyna up to date on the current state of Talim Bay in Lian and provided practical tips on how they can help lessen plastic pollution.
