Report: Facebook adds Instagram filters for non-smartphones

Instagram members who use cheaper feature phones instead of smartphones can now add simple effects to their photos, thanks to a new filter app from Facebook. The upgraded "Facebook for Every Phone" app initially includes Sepia and Black-and-White filters that users of feature phone with Java can apply to their photos. "As part of our ongoing efforts to create a better Facebook mobile experience across all devices, we are excited to announce that the Facebook for Every Phone app now has TWO filters, SEPIA AND BLACK & WHITE, for your mobile photos," Facebook said. It said the filters allow users to "(t)ake pictures, change their look, and share with your friends straight from your app." The app came after Facebook bought the massively popular Instagram photo sharing app for $1 billion earlier this year. A separate article on InsideFacebook.com pointed out the app offers an option to make photos sepia or black and white by clicking the “effects” button. However, InsideFacebook also noted no one from the Instagram team was involved with the new Facebook For Every Phone feature. It said the app "was made by one engineer during a Hackathon event." This was the latest update to the "Facebook For Every Phone" app, to bring smartphone-like capabilities to Java-enabled feature phones. Last month, Facebook updated the app to allow users to interact with pages and check into locations – to increase engagement among feature phone users, particularly in growing markets like India and Africa. The enthusiast site also cited a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission showing about 83 million monthly active users accessed Facebook solely through mobile apps or m.facebook.com in March. — LBG, GMA News
