Instagram rival PicPlz shutters down in July

Now that photo sharing app Instagram has been absorbed into the mighty social networking giant Facebook, one of its competititors is shutting down in July.

PicPlz, widely regarded as an independent alternative to Instagram, said in a blog post it will cease operations and delete images stored with it.

"On July 3, 2012, picplz will shut down permanently, and all photos and user data will be deleted. Until then, users may download their own photos by clicking on the download link next to each photo in their photo feed," it said on its blog.

The service thanked its users for their support and guidance, and said it had been "a pleasure" bringing picplz to users.

"(B)ut we have decided to move on to other projects and have made the tough decision to shut it down," it said.

A separate article on tech site CNET said the Instagram alternative's app allowed users to share mobile photos and was integrated with various social networks, including Facebook, Twitter, and Flickr.

But with Facebook's $1-billion acquisition of Instagram, PicPlz was viewed as viable alternative for users turned off by the blockbuster deal.

CNET also noted an investment in PicPlz by Instagram backer Andreessen Horowitz led to accusations that VC had "fumbled" its investment in Instagram.

It said Horowitz had written in April that funding each company created an ethical conflict and led to the decision to stop funding Instagram and return valuable rights to the new Facebook acquisition. — TJD, GMA News
