Twitter extends API v1 life to June 11

Twitter is extending by a month the life of its application programming interface (API) version 1 - from May 7 to June 11 - to allow more time for testing.

In a blog post, Twitter's Taylor Singletary said an announcement of the date and time of the next blackout test from @twitterapi will be announced soon.

"We're extending the API v1 retirement date from May 7, 2013 to June 11, 2013, in order to accommodate additional blackout testing," Singletary said.

An article on tech site T3.com said Twitter had announced the retirement of API v1 last March.

It would mean the removal of legacy widgets such as "Goodie" or "Join the Conversation," and the discontinuation of XML, RSS, and ATOM response formats.

"Clients will need to make the move to v1.1 before v1 shuts down as it will cease to work. The extended time will give clients the chance for a smoother transistion between API's," it said.

Expected to replace the API is Version 1.1 - the first major update since its launch.

"The update will bring improved rate limits, JSON support only, updated developer rules and new Twitter client policies," T3.com said. — TJD, GMA News
