PHOTOSHOP HER FORM

Standards of beauty in 18 countries, including the Philippines

The various standards of beauty across the globe was highlighted by a set of edited images of a female form, manipulated to make her "more attractive to other citizens of their country."

Female graphic designers from 18 countries, including the Philippines, participated in the study conducted by Superdrug Online Doctors on how beauty is perceived around the world.

The study gave the following instrcuction to the designers: "Photoshop her form. The idea is to Photoshop and retouch this woman to make her more attractive to the citizens of your country. We are looking to explore how perceptions of beauty change across the world. Multiple designers are involved. You can modify clothing, but her form must be visible. No nudity. All other changes, including those to her shape and form, are up to you."

Take a look at how the designers envisioned their country's standard of beauty below.

The study then asked participants to guess the weight of the women in each Photoshopped image, assuming a height of 165 cm (about 5-foot-5). It then calculated the estimated weight and body mass index of each woman.

The Philippines' entry was 128 lbs. with a 21.3 BMI, identical to entries from the United States and Mexico. China had the lowest BMI at 17.0, while Spain had the highest at 25.5.
