Emirati vlogger reacts to Kuwaiti IG star's OFW rant: ‘There's a reason they run away from you’

Over the weekend, Emirati columnist and social commentator Khalid Al Ameri  released a video on Facebook, in response to Kuwaiti Instagram personality Sondos Alqattan.

Alqattan sparked outrage for airing her disappointment over the new laws passed by the Kuwaiti government that grants Filipino workers a mandatory day off as well as guarantees seven hours of sleep daily. Their employers are also forbidden to confiscate their passports.

She has since been dropped by three beauty brands following her rant.

Al Ameri joined the chorus of voices criticizing Alqattan's reaction and pointed out the obvious lack of humanity in her statements.

"How would you feel if you worked for someone that [not only refused to give you] a day off, but disagreed with the very ideology that you deserve a day off?" Al Ameri exclaimed.

Once again pointing out the obvious, Al Ameri said that leisure is necessary and almost all jobs include paid leaves. "We are not robots at the end of the day, we are all humans [and we] expect to have time to rest and time for ourselves," he added.

Al Ameri expressed even more outrage at Alqattan's second complaint, which is that letting her employees hold their passport means they can run away at any time.

"There's a reason they keep running away from you and maybe you are that a reason," he said.

Al Ameri said that people who believe they can withhold someone's human rights based on where they're from, what they look like, and what they believe in pose a serious threat to the world and to the universal need to live in peace.

"I believe we are all human beings in this planet [who] all want the same things in life — to be happy, to grow old with the people we love, to take care of our families, and to be at peace. I think anyone [who] gets in the way of that is a serious problem to this world and to the way we want to live our lives," he said.

Al Ameri concluded his video with words of gratitude for the millions of Filipinos who have had to endure violence and unfair labor practices on top of the loneliness of being separated from their loved ones.

"On behalf of my country, on behalf of my family, I want to thank every single domestic worker in this part of the world for helping us and being part of our family," he said. — Aya Tantiangco/LA, GMA News
