Student, who lives in village without power, stays in school beyond class hours to finish homework

A student  in Quezon squeezed thousands of hearts with his dedication to keep studying no matter the hour, or the fact that there was an incoming typhoon.

In a Facebook post that has since gone viral, Mark Pee Ortil Pornasdoro, a teacher from Malusak National High School in Atimonan, Quezon, told the story of his student staying in the classroom beyond school hours just to finish his homework.

The teacher said he went to inspect his classroom at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday evening in preparation of Typhoon Ompong, and came upon one of his students.

He was alone with his head bowed, intent on doing his homework, which Pornasdoro told them could be submitted the following day.

Despite the teacher's insistence, the student continued with his homework and finished it at 7:38 p.m.

Pornasdoro then revealed that the student lives in Barangay Malusak, and that they didn't have electricity and makes do with gaslamps.

Kahit gabihin, kahit gutumin. Makapag-aral. Matuto lang. Marangal," he said.

Pornasdoro said that his student's dedication brought him hope, and reminded him why teachers must fight to teach, and teach well.

Nakakaluha. Ngunit ngumingiti ang aking kaluluwa. May pag-asa," he added.

In a subsequent post the following day, Pornasdoro posted a photo of his student reading netizens' comments about him.

"Salamat daw." -NB, GMA News
