Crown Prince Felipe inaugurates World Congress of Spanish language in Panama


PANAMA CITY - Spain's Crown Prince Felipe had a busy Sunday visiting a monument to Spanish explorer Vasco Núñez de Balboa and inaugurating the 6th annual World Congress of the Spanish language.

At the 6th Congress Crown Prince Felipe was preceded by Peruvian author and literary Nobel Laureate Mario Vargas Llosa.

"In the globalized world of our time, belonging to a community of so many millions of people who can understand each other above all and in spite of their differences, because of the words that we use to communicate with, to write, to dream," he told the participants who are there to discuss and share all things regarding the Spanish language.

Felipe told the capacity crowd that although the conquest of the Americas was accomplished through "blood and fire" as he attributed author Carlos Fuentes with saying, he told the audience it was also responsible for spreading "the word and the cross."

"In that same year of 1513 the first Diocese, that of Santa Maria del Antigua del Darien was founded," said Felipe. "It started to evangelize at the same time that news ideas and values were being born, those of western civilization, the inheritor of ancient Greece and Rome, christianized and open to Mestizo culture."

The Congress of the Spanish Language will run through October 23rd. — Reuters
