Artistic expression unleashed at the Makiling Inter-Cultural Arts Festival

The learning and practice of one’s art can be nurtured better in a natural environment—one cannot help but be inspired by healthy air, lush forests, breathtaking scenery, the company of like-minded friends and awe-inspiring teachers. During the launch of MAKILINC, the first ever Makiling Inter-Cultural Arts Festival at the Philippine High School for the Arts (PHSA) in Los Baños, Laguna, the sunset alone was enough to evoke positive, artistic, spiritual, even romantic feelings.

Since 1977, PHSA has been offering scholarships to artistically gifted Filipino youth in the areas of music, theater, dance, creative writing and the visual arts. What sort of artists then would walk out of this school’s halls, raised on a daily dose of natural inspiration? The kind that would win a Palme d’Or (Raymond Red) or a 13 Artists citation from the Cultural Center of the Philippines (Don Salubayba and Leeroy New)?

PHSA’s distinguished graduates also include Grace Nono, Diwa de Leon and members of the groups Anino Shadowplay Collective, Makiling Ensemble and Sipat Lawin Ensemble.

And so to further broaden the experience and exposure of its current students, PHSA in partnership with the Cultural Center of the Philippines organized the first MAKILINC, a series of talks and workshops in collaboration with Filipino and foreign guest artists.

MAKILINC also commemorates National Arts Month in Mt. Makiling and aims to position Los Baños as a Philippine art capital.

The public and media program on the second day of MAKILINC included a series of performances from members of the performance art group Tupada, foreign guest performers Amy Klement and Michael Steger, and from the school director and popular performance artist Vim Nadera.

Among the performances was Tupada Action Media Art’s Joash Roxas’ “Silpasara”. Roxas walked around the area wearing a robe and carrying over his head a roof-like structure. He concluded his performance by clipping letters along a thin rope to spell the statement: “God is beautiful and he loves beauty.”

Another was the work of Brisa Dominguez, who drew circles—big ones at first, then increasingly smaller ones—on the ground with chalk. Then she flogged herself with pencils tied together and dipped in blood before writing “I promise to serve my country” repeatedly on a piece of paper.

Other guest artists at MAKILINC who are sharing their experiences and expertise with PHSA students and other members of the audience during the week-long event are Oscar Peñaranda, Literature, San Francisco, USA; Raymond Red, Filmmaking, Philippines; and Jay Javier, Photography, Philippines. — BM, GMA News
