PHL artists, art enthusiasts to assemble at Marvel Creative Day Out

It’s not exactly an invitation to join the Avengers, but it’s close enough.

On September 22, the UP Theater at the University of the Philippines - Diliman campus will serve as the venue for “Marvel Creative Day Out,” a special art-centric initiative from American comic book publisher Marvel Comics for its Filipino fanbase. This full-day “community event” will feature discussions and exhibitions about comic book art and storytelling, with a specific focus on Marvel’s pantheon of super-heroes.

This event will be held in partnership with the UP College of Fine Arts, the UP Diliman Office for Initiatives in Culture and the Arts, the UP Theatre, and the National Commission of Culture and the Arts, with the aim of inspiring creativity in the rising generation of young artists and encouraging them to further hone their craft and keep the Philippine art scene fresh and alive.

Tales to astonish

A few of Marvel’s talented Pinoy artists will be trading in their pencils for microphones for “Marvel Creative Day Out,” including Harvey Tolibao ("Iron Man", "X-Men"), Mico Suayan ("Moon Knight"), Leinil Francis Yu ("Secret Invasion", "Avengers"), and Stephen George Segovia ("Wolverine", "Thor"). These world-renowned illustrators will talk about their experiences—and lessons learned—in working with and for the House of Ideas.

Also set to deliver a talk at the event is Marvel Asia’s Vice President of Brand Development, C.B. Cebulski, who will discuss the Marvel Universe as a whole, as well as the qualities the company is looking for in potential Marvel comics artists.

Marvel two-in-one

“Marvel Creative Day Out” won’t just be a day of learning, though — it will also be a day of recognizing new and upcoming talent. Arguably the main highlight of the event, Marvel will showcase the best original, previously unpublished artwork submissions from students and aspring artists in the country. Not only will these young artists get the chance to strut their stuff, they will also be able to ask for tips and advice from the Pinoy Marvel artists who will grace the event.

Other things to look forward to at the “Marvel Creative Day Out” are live art demonstrations, booths that will showcase some of the best work from Marvel’s top artists, and a collaboration wall where guests can take a pen and doodle away with the rest of the Marvel fan community.

The hero who could be you
