Meeting Hugh Jackman, one of Hollywood's nicest guys

I clearly remember 18 years ago when my then future brother-in-law told me that an unknown Australian actor had been cast as one of my favorite X-Men, Wolverine.  My immediate reaction was doubt. I thought, Why in the world would director Bryan Singer get someone no one knew to play such an important role?

Fast forward to 2017. I could barely stay in my seat before entering the interview room knowing that I was about to face the man who had become such an important part of the movie industry. Hugh Jackman is a triple threat who has given so much to all his roles, especially to Wolverine, whose claws he has put on for 17 years in a total of nine movies.

Hugh has always had a reputation for being one of the nicest guys in Hollywood and I witnessed this myself as, upon entering the interview room, his ready smile and warm handshake immediately put me at ease. More so when I saw his appreciation for my simple gift of dried mangoes which he said he has always loved.

And that night at the red carpet premier of Logan at the famous Taiwan landmark Taipei 101, Hugh tried his hardest to shake hands, take selfies and sign autographs for the many fans who showed up to see him despite the cold weather.

Logan is his last outing as Wolverine.  And saying goodbye to the man who made the character so easy to love is difficult. The night before the interview itself, I, along with other members of the media were able to watch the movie in its entirety and I saw this man’s perfect last hurrah to the role that made him famous worldwide.

Hugh Jackman is moving on and Logan is his love letter, he says, for all the fans of X-Men and Wolverine.

One preparation I did before leaving for Taiwan was reading the comic book Old Man Logan, on which this particular evolution of Logan (remember that there are many different timelines and dimensions in the comic world) was loosely based. I brought my copy with me to the interview hoping that I could get it signed as a souvenir.  Unfortunately, with the number of press people lined up one after the other, the interview schedule was tight so we were not allowed extras such as asking for photos or autographs.

However, I was more than lucky as Hugh not only allowed me a selfie, he even took it himself.

In between interviews on the red carpet, he also signed my comic book plus my Logan poster. And most importantly, gave me a hug.

Hugh is one of very few actors who would go the extra mile to make his fans happy and I’m privileged to say, I am one of them.
