QC-based church choir Kammerchor Manila wins international competition in Italy


Kammerchor Manila won the Grand Prix and was hailed as the Best Choir of the Festival at the 1st Leonardo da Vinci International Choral Festival in Florence, Italy on Friday, July 14.



After a backbreaking three-day competition, the choir bested 11 choirs from Slovenia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Czech Republic, Poland, Australia, among other countries from Asia and Europe.

Aside from winning the Grand Prize, KM also garnered gold diplomas for winning the following categories: Mixed Choir Category (96.25 points), Modern and Contemporary Music Category (97.81 points), Popular, Folk, Gospel, Barbershop, Jazz, Modern Ensembles Category (96.56 points), and Sacred Music Category (95.94 points, second place).

Among the songs they performed were “Kaisa-Isa Niyan” by Nilo Alcala and “Her Sacred Spirit Soars” by Eric Whitacre.

They were awarded a replica of “La Battaglia di Anghiari” by Leonardo da Vinci and 3,000 Euros cash prize.  The group also received special awards for Best Male Soloist  (Tenor Reyjhon Regis) for the song “Let it Be” and the Audience Special Prize.

Prior to the competition in Florence, the group also competed in the 8th Musica Eterna Roma in Rome, Italy last July 5-9 where they were a finalist in the Grand Prix Round and won in the Mixed Choir Category. They also received gold diplomas for the following categories: Mixed Choirs, Gospel and Spiritual, and the Musica Sacra.

Kammerchor Manila is a church choir based in Hearts of Jesus and Mary parish in West Triangle, Quezon City, led by musical director Anthony Go Villanueva. They are a 2016 Ani ng Dangal awardee, recognized by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) after winning the 42nd Festival of Songs in Olomouc, Czech Republic in 2014.

Before coming home, they will be competing at the 63rd Certamen Internacional de Habaneras y Polifonica in Torrevieja, Spain this coming July 17 – 23. — LA, GMA News
