'Boceto for Spoliarium' by Juan Luna sells for P63M at auction

Going once, twice, and it's sold.

The recently unveiled "Boceto for Spoliarium" by Juan Luna on Saturday fetched P63 million at the Rigodon Ballroom as part of the "Important Philippine Art" of "The Well-Appointed Life" by the Salcedo Auctions.

GMA News journalist Joseph Morong on Twitter reported that the winning bid was made by a client on the phone.

Salcedo Auctions hailed the discovery of the boceto as "the greatest Philippine art discovery in recent memory."

The "Boceto for Spoliarium" was unveiled at The Gallery at The Peninsula Manila on August 30. Documents supporting the boceto's authenticity was shared with the press in September.

An email correspondence acquired by Salcedo Auctions regarding the sale of Juan Luna's "España y Filipinas" links to the boceto being part of a collection inherited by the family of Doña Maria Nuñez Rodriguez, the daughter-in-law of Don Jose Vazquez Castiñeira.

The Vazquez Castiñeiras likely acquired the boceto during one of the exhibits held in the residence of Pedro Paterno in Madrid, Spain. — AT, GMA News
