Summer workshops for kids this 2012


Summer vacation used to mean hours of playing in the streets, sucking santan nectar and eating aratilis. For kids these days, summer vacation means extended hours in front of the computer, or on the couch with the latest gadgets.
 
Workshops are a great way to get your kids interested in new things, or encourage them to develop their talents. They also get to meet new friends, and keep active.
 
There are quite a few workshops to choose from this summer, whether you want the classic dance, theater and art classes or some newer courses like fashion design and even book making. Here are some activities to keep your kids occupied during their break:
 
1. Jomike Tejido's Foldabots art workshop
 
Kids can make their own cardboard robots at Jomike Tejido's Foldabots art workshop scheduled on May 14, 16 and 18 from 9 am to 12 noon. Children aged seven and up will be taught how to design their characters and create write-ups, agimat power cards and comics. At the end of the three-day workshop, participants will have created their own Foldabots toybook.
 
The workshop will be held at the Lopez Memorial Museum, Ortigas Center. The fee is P3,500, including materials.

2. Summer Art Workshops at Ayala Museum
 
Kids aged seven to twelve can enroll in The Ayala Museum's creative workshops, where they will be introduced to the techniques and movements of artists Fernando Zobel (syringe painting), Henri Matisse (drawing with scissors), Andy Warhol (pop art portrait painting), Jose Joya (clay art), Pablo Picasso (cubism painting), HR Ocampo (collage art), George Seurat (puncher pointilism) and Jackson Pollock (marble action painting).
 
The workshops will be held at Ayala Museum from 3 to 5 p.m. on April 4, 12, 19 and 26, and on May 3, 10, 17 and 24. The workshop fee is P250 per session, or P2,000 pesos for all 8 sessions.

3. Adarna House Book Making Workshop for kids
 
Kids aged six to eleven can learn the basics of book development in the Adarna House Book Making Workshop. Scheduled from April 16 to 20 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, the workshop will teach kids how to write their own story, organize the narrative into scenes, as well as draw their characters and events on each page.
 
The workshop will be held at the Adarna House in Quezon City. The fee is P4,000, inclusive of materials.

4. Creative Writing and Art Storytelling workshops for Children at Museo Pambata
 
Palanca Hall of Famer Genaro Gojo Cruz will facilitate the workshop, which will be held on April 14, 18, 21 and 25 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. The workshop fee is P3,000.
 
Storyhouse's Jay Menes will facilitate a workshop on Art Storytelling, which will be held on April 25, 26, and 27 from 9 a.m. to 11 am. The workshop fee is P1,000.
 
Both workshops will be held at Museo Pambata.

5. Summer Kids' Workshop 2012 at the Children’s Library
 
Kids aged seven to twelve will learn Storytelling, Puppet-making and Arts and Crafts at the Summer Kids' Workshop 2012. Organized by the National Library of the Philippines in cooperation with Children's Literature Association of the Philippines, the workshop will be held on April 11 to 13, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 pm. The workshop fee is P1,500 inclusive of materials and three lunches.

6. Children's Theater at the Philippine Educational Theater Association
 
Children aged six to eight and nine to twelve can enroll in PETA's Children's Theater courses, which enable kids to explore and experience music, movement and dance, visual arts, storytelling, drama improvisation, poetry and simple story writing. PETA integrates fun and games in its creative processes, which develop and enrich the imagination, inspiration, self-confidence, self-appreciation and appreciation of others, nature and culture.
 
The workshops will be held from April 10 to May 6, from 8 a.m. to 12 noon at the PETA Theater Center in Quezon City. The workshop fee is P8,000.

7. Sipat Lawin Ensemble's Theater Workshops
 
Kids aged four to seven can join the Basic Performance Workshop, while those aged eight to twelve can join the Creative Performance Workshop. Both workshops are scheduled on April 10, 12, 14, 17, 19, 21, 24 and 26, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. There will be a culminating activity on April 28.
 
The workshop will be held at Museo Pambata. The workshop fee is P4,500, inclusive of art materials.

8. Summer Magic Workshop for Kids
 
Kids aged eight to twelve can learn to perform magic with Trickmaster JB Dela Cruz. The workshop is on April 13, 14 and 15, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at  Fully Booked Bonifacio High Street. The workshop fee is P5,000 pesos.

9. Make Believe Summer Workshops at Fully Booked
 
Little Fashionista: Fashion and Crafts for Girls
 
Girls aged six and above will learn to design and make clothes and accessories in this workshop by Make Believe Productions. The workshops will be held from April 11 to May 7 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The workshop fee is P7,800 for 12 sessions.
 
Camp Rock: Singing and Songwriting for Kids
 
Kids aged seven and up can join Camp Rock and learn to compose their own music. The classes will be held from April 11 to May 7 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. There will be a short concert at the end of the workshop.
 
Small Tales: Storytelling and Crafts for Kids
 
Kids aged five to eight will be taught to create and tell their own stories, using simple props. The workshop will be held from April 11 to May 7, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
 
The Make Believe Workshops will be held at Fully Booked in Bonifacio High Street.

10. Photography workshop at Filipinas Heritage Library
 
Kids aged seven to twelve can join the Photography for Kids workshop, where they can discover and develop their love for photography. Lectures will be done in a classroom setting, before the kids will have a supervised photo shoot and photo clinic.
 
The workshop will be held at the Filipinas Heritage Library in Makati. The fee is P1,200.

11. Fashion design for kids
 
Budding fashionistas aged six to twelve can join the Fashion Design for Kids workshop to learn jewelry making, mask making, basic batik art, silkscreen painting, T-shirt designing, denim deconstruction and other creative projects. The workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 noon on Tuesdays and Thursdays from April 10 to May 22 at the School of Fashion and the Arts. The workshop fee is P4,500 for four sessions (12 hours) and P8,000 for eight sessions (24 hours). The fees include all materials.

12. 43rd CCP Summer Dance Workshop 2012
 
Kids and even babies can enroll in the Cultural Center of the Philippines' six-week intensive program, which has classes like Baby Ballet, Classical Ballet for all levels, Modern and Contemporary Dance, Dance Improvisation and Choreography, and Hip-Hop. The classes are also open to dance teachers and choreographers. 
 
The workshop will be held from April 10 to May 20, and will culminate with two recital performances at the CCP Main Theater on May 19 and 20.

13. Cooking boot camp at CCA
 
Kids aged seven to ten and 10 to 16 can register for the Center for Culinary Arts' Young Chef's Boot Camp, where they will learn to whip up dishes from international cuisines, lunchbox goodies, pastries and desserts. The five-day course will be held in the afternoons from Monday to Friday, in April and May.
 
The workshop will be held at CCA Katipunan and CCA Podium. The course fee is P7,800, and includes certificate of completion, apron, toque, lecture materials, and recipe ingredients.

14. Mad Science Summer Camp
 
Kids aged six to twelve can go crazy with Astroboy Arvin, Gravity Gideon, Ketone Kayanne at the Mad Science Summer Camp.
 
Campers will dig dino bones, inspect bugs, experiment with dry ice, fly rockets and make slime at the Mad Science Headquarters.
 
The camp schedules are from April 10 to 23, May 7 to 18 and May 21 to June 1. Each schedule will include different topics, so kids can enroll in more than one schedule.  
 
The camp will be held in two sites, Quezon City and Alabang.
 
At the Mad Science Headquarters-Philippines at 58 Victoria Ave., New Manila, QC, the workshop fee is P3,500 for one schedule (ten sessions). A ten percent discount will be given to those who enroll in all three schedules.
