Keep the kids and teens busy with summer workshops


School may be out for the summer, but that doesn't mean kids can't keep learning. Parents might be tempted to just let the little ones spend their days on the couch, but there are plenty of activities to keep them busy and happy.
 
Here are some summer workshops in the metro for 2013:
 
ART
 
1. KidzArt
 
Not your regular art workshop, KidzArt's "Around the World" Summer Art Camp introduces kids to cultural heritage and landmarks in different countries. Apart from their regular drawing program, they offer classes on basic and advanced painting, fashion design, and fun with clay.
 
The camp will be held at the Mandaluyong, Shaw Studio on Monday to Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 12 noon and 4 to 6:30 p.m. from April 15 to 26 and May 6 to 17.  
 
There will also be a camp at BGC, 9th Avenue Studio on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from April 8 to 29.

2. William Gaudinez art workshops for kids and teens
 
At Sev's Cafe along Roxas Boulevard, William Gaudinez will be teaching art to kids 6 to 12 years old and 13 to 18 years old in six three-hour sessions. The sessions will be from 2 to  5 p.m. in April and May.

3. Scriptcheer Art and Inspiration's Summer A.R.T. Jam 2013 for kids and adults
 
The Summer A.R.T. Jam 2013 focuses on art and music as therapy. A is for art, where participants will draw, paint and sculpt. R is for Rock, Rhythm and Rhyme, where participants will engage in an art and music jam. T is for tour and therapy, in which participants will visit galleries and museums.
 
Summer A.R.T. Jam 2013 will be held from April 3 to 27, Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8:30 to 11 a.m.
 
The workshop fees, which are inclusive of materials, are P7,500 for 8 sessions or P4,500 for 4 sessions.

4. Visual Arts at Museo Pambata
 
Children from four to six-years-old can enroll in Museo Pambata's Basic Visual Arts classes, to be taught by Hubert B. Fucio. The classes will be held on April 16, 17, 18, 23, 24, and 25 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. 
 
Meanwhile, children from 7 to 12 can enroll in the Advanced Visual Arts classes, to be taught by Marc Vincent P. Cosico. The classes will be held on April 16, 17, 18, 23, 24, and 25 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.

5. 4th Kids Art Work summer art workshop 2013
 
Founded by architects Ivy Rivera and Lily Beltran, Kids Art Work features arts and crafts projects for kids from 5 to 12 years old. Basic lessons include introduction of lines, forms and shapes, shades and shadows, proportions and composition, sketching, cartoon drawing, origami, still life, pen and ink, watercolor, and sculpting. Advanced lessons include still life, landscape, seascape, figures and animals.
 
The lessons will be from 1 to 4 p.m. every Friday and Saturday, in two batches.
 
For the first batch, the lessons will be on April 5, 6,12, 13, 19, 20, 26 and 27. The second batch will have their lessons on May 3, 4, 10, 11, 17, 18, 24 and 25.
 
The fee, inclusive of materials is P3,500 for basic lessons and P4,000 for advanced lessons.

6. Spotlight Pilipinas' summer workshops on photography and writing
 
Learn from Alexis Fusilero, a freelance art director and a food, advertising, lifestyle and fashion photographer and writer Jude Cartalaba in Spotlight Pilipinas' photography and travel writing workshops on March 16, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. 
 
At the end of the workshop, participants will have a one-week online coaching from the facilitators. The workshop will be held at The Hub, Greenfield District. For more information, visit Jude Cartalaba's blog. 
 
7. Young Artists’ Studio art education camp
 
With this year's theme Art and its Muses, campers will explore different art inspirations such as literature, music, movies, landmarks, history, folklore, and icons  while enhancing their skills in painting, drawing, photography, fashion styling and make up.
 
The camp will be held in April and May in YAS branches in Greenhills, Visayas Avenue, Loyola Heights, St. Joseph College of Novaliches, and Fully Booked in Bonifacion High Street.

8. Make Believe Productions' arts and crafts
 
Make Believe Productions will hold Imaginart arts and crafts classes for kids 3.5 to 5.5 at Imagine That! Creative Playspace Center, Unit 201 Three Salcedo Place Tordesillas Street, Salcedo Village, Makati from April 10 to May 21 and at the Learning Jungle, F112-F113 Forbeswood Heights Forbes Town Center, Rizal Drive Fort Bonifacio, Taguig from April 16 to May 21.
 
MUSIC 
 
1.  Summer workshops at The Music School of Ryan Cayabyab

Children from 4 to 7 years old can enroll in this music appreciation class which will introduce them to the elements of music through various activities that include singing, rhythm and movement, instrumental ensemble playing and a whole lot more. 
 
14K
 
For kids aged 8-13 years old, this music appreciation class involves singing, rhythm and movement, and acting. At the end of the workshop, the students will be featured in an original music theater work especially made for this year’s group.
 
Singing Showstoppers
 
For the older set of 14 to 25-year-olds who desire to sing and perform, yet are inhibited or lack knowledge, this workshop involves physical and vocal warm-ups, singing exercises and learning songs accompanied by movement and dance.

COOKING
 
1. Little Chefs at Enderun 
 
Enderun Extension will hold its summer courses for Little Chefs and Junior Chefs. Little Chefs from 7 to 10 years old will learn hands-on food preparation skills as they whip up scrumptious and nutritious dishes. Junior Chefs from 11 to 18 years old will be introduced to the world of culinary arts as they learn fundamental skills in the kitchen.
 
The first batch will have their classes on April 2, 4 and 5, while the second batch will hold their classes on May 6, 7 and 8.

READING AND WRITING
 
1. The Learning Library
 
To improve your child's skills in reading, writing and speaking in English and Filipino, The Learning Library offers programs conducted by expert teachers and supplemented by a library of over 4,000 of the best books in English and Filipino.

2. Creative writing workshop at Museo Pambata
 
Children aged 12 to 18 years old can attend classes facilitated by Genaro Gojo Cruz. There will be four sessions on April 12, 16, 18 and 20 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. The fee is P3,500.

3. Bookmaking workshop at Adarna House
 
For budding independent authors, this workshop covers everything from creating the story, drawing the illustrations, and designing the book cover. Ang Ilustrador ng Kabataan's (Ang InK) Annie Lumbao will facilitate the workshop.
 
The workshop will be held form May 6 to 10, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.

4. Junior Book Crew at Fully-Booked
 
Children from 11 to 16 can join the Fully Booked Junior Book Crew, a month-long workshop that will give them an opportunity to expand their love for books and the written word, plus a chance to experience what it is like to perform certain tasks in the bookstore. 
 
The workshop is from April 10 to May 10, 2013. Only 30 participants will be selected, and they will be required to pay a joining fee of P2000 before the workshop begins.

6. Winged Wonder iGenius Grand Annual Arts and Crafts 2013
 
For three to seven-year-olds, a mini class will be held from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., while eight to 15-year-olds can attend the join the big group from 3 to 5 p.m.
 
The workshops will be held in two batches, with a different genius in focus for each session. The workshops are on Steve Jobs (Pixar’s Finding Nemo Artwork), Jose Rizal (Dr. Rizal’s “Gamu-gamu”), Blaise Pascal (Tangram Artwork), Walt Disney (Mickey and Minnie Artwork), Thomas Edison (Lightbulb Artwork), Albert Einstein (Physics Artwork), and Steven Spielberg (Praxinoscope).
 
The classes are on April 10, 12, 15, 17, and May 19, 22 and 24 for Batch 1; and May 3, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15 and 17 for Batch 2.

THEATER
 
1. 2013 PETA Summer Program: Your Stories Take Centerstage!
 
PETA has programs for children, teens, and adults. Kids from 6 to 8 can join Children's Theater 1, while those from 9 to 12 can join Children's Theater 2. Teens from 13 to 16 can join Teen Theater, while those aged 17 and up can join Theater Arts, Basic Acting, and Creative Musical Theater.

2. Theater workshop at Museo Pambata
 
Children from 8 to 12 years old can join Museo Pambata's theater workshop, to be facilitated by Sipat Lawin Ensemble. The workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 noon on  April 10, 11, 12, 16, 17, 18, 23, 24, 25 and 26.

3. Gantimpala Theater summer workshop
 
36-year-old dramatic arts company Gantimpala Theater opens its 2013 Summer Musical Theater Workshop for Teens and Young Adults.
 
Workshop participants will learn how to act, sing, and dance in musical theater production, under the guidance of Roeder Camañag, singer, actor and director.
 
Classes will be from April 1 to May 11, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 1 to 5 p.m. The workshop fee is P5,000.

4. Trumpets Playshop
 
In 1993, Trumpets Playshop began with a few acting courses for children, teens, and adults. Today, the summer workshop includes courses on acting, performance, voice, dance, movement, art, singing, technical theater, theaterdesign, photography, and newscasting.

5. Repertory Philippines Summer Workshop
 
Repertory Philippines has its Repertory Summer Camp for children from five to 16 years old. Campers will learn the art of acting through various theater games, that will get them used to getting on their feet and moving around. The summer camp also culminates in the staging of a play or a musical. The workshops are divided into classes for Kiddies (5 to 8 years old), Pre-Teens (9 to 12 years old), and Teens (13 to 16 years old).
 
Meanwhile, its classes for adult beginners acting are open to adults 17 years old and above, with no previous acting or workshop experience.

3. ACTS Academy

VOLUNTEER
 
1. A-HA! Learning Center Teens can volunteer at A-HA! Learning Center this summer. The center is looking for passionate, committed, and loving people to join the weekend crew and the weekday crew. Volunteers are also needed to help make the materials. Storybooks, textbooks, and food donations are also most welcome.

2. Hands On Manila
 
Hands On Manila will hold their monthly volunteer orientation on March 21, just in time for the summer. Hands On Manila's alternative model of volunteer service is flexible, allowing volunteering to be integrated into daily schedules even for busy individuals.
 
The orientation will be at 6 p.m. in Powerbooks Greenbelt 4.
 
3. Bayani Challenge
 
Sign up for this year's Bayani Challenge and join other volunteers as they show their love for country by caring for the poor through building homes, repairing schools, health missions, tree planting, activities with kids and more. The Bayani Challenge will be held on March 23 – 27, 2013.
