Manila Bulletin chairman Don Emilio Yap passes away

(Updated 8:06 p.m.) Business tycoon and Manila Bulletin chairman Emilio T. Yap passed away on Monday noon. He was 88 years old.

According to the office of Aurora Tan, Manila Bulletin's vice president of the executive department, Yap died at 12:05 p.m. Details of his death, as well as of his interment, are yet to be released.

Yap, who was elected as Bulletin's chairman of the board in July 1984, was also the chairman emeritus of Philtrust Bank and chairman of the board of Manila Hotel.

In 2013, Yap ranked 13th on Forbes' list of the 50 richest personalities in the Philippines.

In a statement, President Benigno Aquino III offered his "deepest sympathies" to Yap's family. "Mr. Yap will long be remembered for his achievements in many areas of economic activity vital to the well-being of our nation—ranging from banking, to hotels and restaurants, to shipping, to publishing, and even to education," the statement read in part.

"On a personal note, I will always remember him as a good friend, not only of my mother, but of the entire family as well. We will always treasure the memories we shared with him," Aquino said.

In a separate statement, Presidential Communications Operations Office secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said, "Don Emilio Yap’s stewardship of the Manila Bulletin for more than four decades is his enduring legacy. He has shaped and steered a major newspaper that has become a standard-bearer of the Filipino nation; an institution whose continuing relevance and resiliency are rooted in the newspaper’s faith and pride in the Filipino people and in their civic consciousness. His presence will be missed; yet his happy memory shall be a constant source of inspiration for a grateful nation."  — Rose-An Jessica Dioquino/BM, GMA News
