8 public school teachers, 2 UP professors win Metrobank teaching award


Eight public school teachers for elementary and secondary, as well as two professors from the University of the Philippines (UP) system, were named winners of this year's Metrobank Search for Outstanding Teachers.
 
The new batch of awardees, which will join some 326 teachers who have been awarded since 1985, include eight educators who hold doctoral degrees.
 
The teachers, which include four each for elementary and secondary levels, are:
  • Anna Bella Abellera of Naga Central School I (Naga City)
  • Sharon Rose Puyo of Cabadbaran South Central Elementary School SPED Center (Cabadbaran City, Agusan del Norte)
  • Enerio Ebisa of Doña Juana Actub Lluch Memorial Central School (Iligan City)
  • Allan Moore Cabrillas of San Jose West Central School (San Jose City, Nueva Ecija)
  • Juanito Merle of Talipan National High School (Pagbilao, Quezon)
  • Jesus Insilada of Alcarde Gustilo Memorial National High School (Calinog, Iloilo)
  • Matrose Galarion of Angeles City National High School (Angeles City, Pampanga)
  • Noel Ibis of Vinzons Pilot High School (Vinzons, Camarines Norte)
  • Resurreccion Sadaba of UP-Visayas 
  • Teodora Balangcod of UP-Baguio.
 
The awardees were among the 312 nominees who were entered into the search this year. Some 146 provincial finalists were named after a review of documents, then they were shortlisted to 42 regional finalists for interviews and teaching demonstrations before the preliminary board of judges in each category. From this, 20 were selected to become national finalists.

Each winner will receive a gold medallion, a trophy, and an increased cash prize of P500,000, in line with the search's 30th anniversary. Their respective schools will also receive a plaque of recognition.
 
They will be presented in a formal awarding on September 5, together with this year's awardees of the Country's Outstanding Police Officers in Service (COPS) and The Outstanding Philippine Soldiers (TOPS).
 
This year's final board of judges was chaired by Sen. Cynthia Villar and co-chaired by Supreme Court Associate Justice Arturo Brion.
 
Joining them were Pasig City Rep. Roman Romulo, Commission on Higher Education (Ched) chairperson Patricia Licuanan, Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Oscar Moreno, and Australian Ambassador H.E. William Tweddell.
 
Also included in the panel of judges were Steven John DeKrey, president of the Asian Institute of Management (AIM), Solar Entertainment Corporation president and CEO Wilson Y. Tieng, and Ayala Land, Inc. and Manila Water Director Antonino Aquino. —Rose-An Jessica Dioquino/KG, GMA News
