Private groups helping in Ruby relief operations call for in-kind, cash donations

Tropical storm Ruby may be expected to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Friday, but its passing through provinces in Luzon and Visayas affected over two million people, more than half of whom are being served inside and outside evacuation centers.

Aside from government agencies on hand to help out the survivors, private institutions are also distributing help in Metro Manila and other provinces affected. They are open to donations from the public, as well as for volunteers:

GMA Kapuso Foundation

According to Libby Cruz of GMA Kapuso Foundation, they accept both cash and in-kind donations of "basics," particularly "ready-to-eat" food, like canned goods and rice, as well as medicine which has expiration date of six months or longer.

However, they no longer accept used clothes as donations.

For cash donations, the foundation accepts cash or check, which can be personally delivered to its office, or deposited in its bank accounts.

For those who wish to help repack relief goods:

Philippine Red Cross

For its part, the Philippine Red Cross said in a post on Tuesday that in-kind donations they need include both food and non-food items.

For food donations, they need:
  • rice
  • ready-to-eat, easy-to-open canned goods (no pork)
  • bottled water
  • noodles (no pork)

For non-food items:
  • sleeping mats
  • blankets
  • hygiene kits (toothpaste and toothbrush, shampoo, soap, etc.)

Those who wish to help are also "encouraged" to donate cash "for operation expenses," to be deposited in their designated bank accounts:

Caritas Manila

Officials at Caritas Manila said that food (such as canned goods) and medicines are most welcome as in-kind donations during disasters.

They still accept donated clothes, as well as cash donations that may be sent through the following bank accounts:

As of Monday evening, Caritas Manila had 2,101 food relief bags and 4888 hygiene kits that were ready for distribution in Baseco compound and Delpan in Manila the following day.

In Tagum City, they readied 3,000 relief bags, 100 hygiene kits, and 100 first aid kits to be given out to typhoon survivors in cities of Catbalogan, Calbayog, and Borongan in Samar on Tuesday morning.

Caritas Manila said it will be handing over financial assistance of P250,000 to the Diocese of Catarman in Northern Samar on Wednesday.

Project Hope

Donating to relief efforts can be as simple as sending a text message with Project Hope. Every $1 donation sends $105 worth of medicines to the victims of Typhoon Ruby.

They also have a holiday gift fund matching promo going on, in which your contribution will be doubled.

Save the Children Philippines

According to the website:

"We have health, education, and shelter kits on standby throughout the Philippines ready to be sent to children in the greatest need at short notice. We also have teams of support workers ready to ensure children are protected from danger, and we create Child Friendly Spaces where children can play in a safe environment, be themselves and start the recovery process.

On December 3rd, we put our emergency response teams on standby, and began warning communities that stood in harm's way to prepare for the worst. Now these teams are responding on the front line, seeing and assessing the needs that created by this latest storm."

Save the Children is now accepting cash donations on their website.
