Pageants empower, don't objectify women, argue Binibining Pilipinas 2015 winners

The winners of the Binibining Pilipinas 2015 stressed on Tuesday that beauty pageants are still relevant in this age because they give women a platform to voice out their opinions.

Second Runner-Up Kimverlyn Suiza, First Runner-Up Hannah Sison, Binibining Pilipinas-Supranational Rogelie Catacutan, Binibining Pilipinas-Intercontinental Christi McGarry, Binibining Pilipinas-International Janicel Lubina, and Binibining Pilipinas-Universe Pia Wurtzbach shared their thoughts in an interview on GMA News TV's "News To Go."

"It gives a platform for women to speak up and raise awareness on certain issues. Kasi nga po, interesado ang mga tao sa beauty pageant, marami po ang nanonood," Wurtzbach said.

Meanwhile, McGarry defended the concept of beauty pageants, saying they are not about objectifying women but appreciating and celebrating them.

"I think it's a celebration of women and a chance to show that even though we're beautiful, we can still be empowered and still be intelligent and use our voices to reach the masses and inspire [them]," she said.

One of the most inspiring stories for this batch is that of Lubina's. She used to be a household helper before she started to join pageants. Now, the people's reaction to her story is her motivation to push harder.

"Parang hindi sila makapaniwala, kasi hindi naman lahat nabibigyan ng opportunity to be here," she said. —Trisha Macas/JST, GMA News
