A new set of Binibining Pilipinas queens will be crowned on April 17. One of the 40 candidates this year will be the country’s next representative to the Miss Universe, and she will take aim at back-to-back wins for the Philippines.

“What we’re looking for is something that the moment she enters the stage, she has presence. You know that she has presence. You know she has a good aura. She doesn’t have to be very attractive but she has confidence. Hindi cockiness. Iyong iba cocky eh. Trying hard. No. Just by being themselves... The best is inside,” veteran director Fritz Ynfante said in an interview with reporters on Tuesday afternoon after the candidates were presented to the media.

Ynfante serves as a consultant of the Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc. who trains the winners before they compete in international pageants. He was also one of the judges during the preliminary competition.

“I’m looking for presence, not another [reigning Bb. Pilipinas and Miss Universe] Pia Wurtzbach but somebody who is representative of that essence,” he added.

According to him, most of the candidates this year are first-timers but there are also a handful who has joined the pageant before. Wurtzbach won the beauty title and the most coveted crown in the universe on her third try. —JST, GMA News
