UP Madrigals home after choral grand prix win

Fresh from retaking the highest honor in the world of choral singing, the Philippine Madrigal Singers arrived in Manila on a high note Tuesday welcomed by government officials who heaped praises on the group's stellar achievement. The 22-man choral group showed their top prize trophy from the 2007 European Grand Prix for Choral Singing to dignitaries of the Department of Tourism (DOT) upon arriving at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) on Tuesday morning, radio station dzBB reported. The Philippine Madrigal Singers' victory makes the Philippines the only country to win the prestigious tilt two times since choral grand prix's inception in 1989. The group, also known as the UP Madrigal Singers or simply Madz, previously took top honors in 1997. Choir master Mark Anthony Carpio told dzBB radio that he and his fellow participants toiled in various European cities for months before finally taking the coveted trophy in Arezzo, Italy last Sunday. Radio station dzBB said the Philippine Madrigals wowed competition judges with a 20-minute, six-song performance. Two songs were originals from Filipino composers, while the rest were renaissance songs, the radio report said. Only the grand prize winners of the six member European choral competitions can compete in the annual grand prix. Professor Andrea Veneracion, National Artist for Music, organized the UP Madrigal Singers in 1963. - GMANews.TV
