What happened to Gloria Diaz and Margie Moran’s Miss Universe crowns?

Former Miss Universe queens Gloria Diaz and Margie Moran are among the most excited for the upcoming Miss Universe 2016 pageant, which will be held in the Philippines this January.

In a press conference last week, the Filipina beauty queens took a trip down memory lane as they recalled their pageant experience.

Gloria and Margie won the coveted crown in 1969 and 1973, respectively, but it remains a mystery to fans if they got to keep it.

The answer: All former winners get a replica of their crown.

According to GMA News reporter Nelson Canlas, the original crown is passed on to the next winner, and the Miss Universe organization gives the former winner a replica of her Miss Universe crown for her to keep for the rest of her life.

Ever the gracious lady, Gloria said she keeps her crown in her home and allows visitors to take pictures with it.

Meanwhile, Margie almost lost hers when she accidentally broke it during one of her trips abroad.

“Miss U 1973 Margarita Moran accidentally broke hers in one of her trips abroad when she checked it in the airport. She had it repaired and still keeps it in her closet,” Nelson shared.

Gloria and Margie will be among the personalities expected in the Miss Universe 2016 Grand Coronatiion Night on January 30, 2017 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

Prior to the pageant, the beauty queens advised candidates to enjoy the once-in-a-lifetime experience.

“You just have to enjoy. You must not be pressured by anybody that you have to win. I find that the contestants nowadays (are) really pressured,” Gloria said.

Margie added, “Just enjoy whatever you're doing because it's a good experience. People will never forget the winner, but what you do to yourself after that experience is the most important.” —Bianca Rose Dabu/KG, GMA News
