3 things to prioritize in maintaining your high-mileage car

A car is a big investment that eventually becomes a big responsibility. As a car owner, you have a lot to oversee, foremost of which is the way you handle and maintain your vehicle.

Part of that responsibility is ensuring the long lifespan of your car, which means you should take note of its upkeep. This is especially important as its value decreases over the years. While pampering your car’s exterior is ideal, properly maintaining it can prevent costly mechanical problems.

But just how do you extend your vehicle's lifespan? Car shopping research company Edmunds says these are the three things that you should prioritize in its maintenance:

1.  Car controls. These are the parts that are mostly under the chassis–your brake system, tires, steering system, suspension, and transmission. Try to listen to your car. From time to time, take a drive with the entertainment system off and roll down your windows. If you hear anything out of the ordinary, have it checked right away.

2. Fluids. Bleed and replace if needed. It’s important to check your brake fluid, transmission fluid, coolant, power steering, differential and engine oil on a regular basis.

3.  Engine. It’s arguably the most important part of your car, as it’s mainly responsible in keeping your car running. The needs of your car’s engine, however, change as time passes. As your car ages, especially those running for more than 100,000 kilometers, it needs extra protection to fight against engine wear, dirt, oil leakage, oil consumption increase, and poor engine performance.

To get the best out of your car’s engine, regardless of its age, Shell developed the new Shell Helix High Mileage Engine Oil. It utilizes synthetic technology that is specifically formulated to provide customized engine protection especially for high-mileage vehicles.  This works well with cars that have been running for a long time because it can provide up to 40% better wear protection while cleaning the engine for superb performance.

“The development of Shell Helix High Mileage is meant to help customers with high-mileage vehicles to prolong the life of their vehicle, so that they can enjoy more memories with their trusted partner through the years,” says Shell Lubricants General Manager Dennis Javier.

Shell Helix Mileage comes in two variants: the Shell Helix High Mileage 10W-40, designed for gasoline engines, and the Shell Helix High Mileage 15W-50, which is made for light-duty diesel engines.

Before going out and getting a three-step wax job or full interior detailing for your car, check your engine’s needs first. That maintenance check will help your car go a long way.
