Miss World PHL Katarina Rodriguez on meeting Duterte: ‘He's very hypnotizing’

What does Davaoena beauty queen Katarina Rodriguez think of President Rodrigo Duterte?

The reigning Miss World Philippines told members of the press during her send-off party on November 8 that she had the pleasure of meeting the president in November 2017 and she had the "honor" of watching him give a speech.

"He's very hypnotizing when he talks, especially when he gives a speech," Katarina said.

"He was saying a lot and there were times (when I was saying), 'yes, yes, I agree with what you're saying.' But when he was done and I reflected, I was like 'no, no, no!'"

Katarina acknowledged that the president is "very good at talking" and as a beauty queen, she wants to fulfill the role of being a listener.

Handling political questions

When asked about her strategy for handling controversial political questions, Katarina said that she doesn't see it as condemning one side and supporting one side completely.

"I think it should be thought of as trying to understand both sides, because if you're mind is set on supporting an entire side completely without understanding the other side, then you're biased," she explained.

"As a beauty queen, understanding people is very important... but also staying true to what you feel is right. Your intuition will never do you wrong... well, mine hasn't anyway."

Katarina said that she is very "inquisitive" and she listens to a diverse variety of perspectives in addition to staying up to date with current events and reading books.
