Glaiza de Castro leads campaign to call out sexual harassment in public

There may be times that silence is the best way to deal with a problem.

But for Kapuso actress Glaiza de Castro argues that this should not be the case if one sees a woman being harassed.

“Huwag magbulag-bulagan, i-report ang sexual harassment,” she said in a 30-second video produced by the United Nations Women Safe Cities Metro Manila Programme and the Quezon City government in celebration of the International Women’s Day on Tuesday.

The “Start Now” advocacy video was launched to stop street harassment and sexual violence against women in public spaces. It is also one of the campaigns to encourage people to help build safer cities for women.

Joining De Castro are Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista and other everyday people who are asking the public not to turn a blind eye from harassment before it becomes rape.

“Suwayin ang mga harasser at manghihipo. Ipagtanggol ang mga inaabuso. Start now,” they said.

According to the first survey on sexual harassment and violence against women in the Philippines conducted by the same organizations,  there is an alarming number of women who have experienced sexual harassment of any kind in the country.

It said that three in five women have experienced sexual harassment at least once in their lifetime. Over 34 percent were victims of flashing, public masturbation, and groping. --Trisha Macas/JST, GMA News
