DOH to provide mental health programs for civilians rescued from Marawi

The Department of Health is arranging for mental health programs for the civilians rescued from the crossfire between government troops and terrorist group Maute in Marawi City.

Dr. Ivanhoe Escartin on Saturday said that they are setting up programs to help the victims cope positively.

"Basically may mga... stress management, inaayos 'yan ng Department of Health na dapat i-identify 'yong mga positive coping styles," he said in an interview in DZBB.

"Dapat positive 'yong coping na ginagawa," he added.

He also said that there needs to be a program not only for disaster victims, but also those who already developed a mental disorder.

"Kung highly stressed na 'yong isang tao, kung dati ay may probelma na siya sa bahay, sa trabaho, o umiinom siya ng alak o [gumagamit ng] drugs, mas madali siyang magkaron ng mental disorder. 'Yon 'yong mga babantayan natin," he added.

Escartin also said that the evacuees will receive "psychological first aid," and that it would be a big factor to provide them basic services.

"Sa evacuation center dapat meron silang pagkain. Dapat merong continuous health services d'on, mga bakuna para sa bata," he said. — Jessica Bartolome / AT, GMA News
