The two things Filipino beauty queens will need to win the crown again

Missosology’s Makoy Manlapaz appeared on Unang Balita Tuesday where, after discussing and analyzing Filipino beauty queen Rachel Peters Miss Universe performance, mentioned two things that beauty queens will need to win.

“Sa group namin – we predict and assess candidates from different pageants – we always say dapat may story ka. Kung walang story, dapat may advocacy ka na pinopromote. This is 2017. Hindi na puwedeng maganda ka lang. Pageants are not looking for a model. They are looking for a spokesperson, so dapat may personality,” Manlapaz said.

He echoed what GMA News Stringer Peterson Gonzaga earlier said: They judges were looking for a strong background story, which Miss South Africa had.

Shortly after becoming Miss South Africa, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters was held up and had a gun pointed at her. But she successfully fought it off.

“Ang Miss Universe ngayon, kailangan may story ka to get the attention of people. When you win, you will travel to different countries – kailangan nang may pangkuha ng attention para people will listen to you. Miss South Africa, lumaban siya physically. Bilang babae, kaya niya ipaglaban yung sarili niya, so mas pakikinggan siya ng mga tao,” Manlapaz continued.

He says there isn’t anything more we could’ve asked from Peters. “Wala naman talagang kulang…best na talaga yung binigay ni Rachel,” Manlapaz said, adding the beauty queen nailed the swimsuit and evening gown competitions.

“It boils down to destiny. It was Miss South Africa’s destiny.” That Demi-Leigh got mugged and fought it off, and joined the pageant at a time when the organization is looking for exactly that story – well, we gotta hand it to her, no?
