'Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho' shows why Christmas is a good time to visit Austria

Christmas in the tropics is nothing white we keep hearing and singing about. There’s hardly anything silent about the night, thanks to extended mall and rush hours, and apple strudels don’t get as much mileage as ensaymada does.

But tonight, "Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho" will give us an idea about all those things. The veteran journalist is visiting Austria (and Croatia and Slovenia) and will be showing us how Christmas is done there, low-key explaining why it’s best visited during the holiday season.

Apart from delicate snow fall that we never get here, Austria is where “Silent Night” was born. It was written by a priest named Josef Mohr and his organist Franz Gruber and was first performed on December 24, 1818.

Legend has it Mohr went out one Christmas night to bless a newborn baby and was so moved by his surroundings – there was snow, it was still, with stars illuminating his path – that he wrote a poem. He quickly gave it to Gruber who composed the tune. It was performed for the first time on Christmas Eve 99 years ago, on 1818.

Apart from its many cozy Christmas markets, there are also Austria’s famous hills and snow-capped mountains where “The Sound of Music” was filmed.

As the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, can you imagine the kind of Christmas caroling you’ll experience in Austria? Perhaps it’s nothing close to hearing Jose Mari Chan in the malls and on the streets, but paired with their delectable apple strudels and fantastic cups of coffee — Vienna particularly has a beautiful coffee shop culture! — Christmas in Austria will give you the warm and fuzzy feeling just the same. — LA, GMA News

Tune in to GMA at 7:45pm and experience Austria’s cozy kind of a Christmas. Who knows, maybe you'll will yourself to spend next Christmas in Austria!
