Globe ties up with HK, SK telcos for overseas LTE data roaming

Globe Telecom will be the first local telecom provider to offer long term evolution (LTE) data roaming abroad, through its tie-up with China Mobile Hong Kong Co. Ltd. and South Korea’s SK Telecom in Korea. “The company leverages on our strong partnership with the two carriers to make the LTE data roaming experience seamless for our postpaid subscribers, who will be the first to access the superior browsing experience from this service,” said Globe president and chief executive officer Ernest Cu. Cu added that Globe is also working with internetwork packet exchange (IPX) providers Sybase, Aicent, Syniverse, Citic, Tata, and BICs to be able to scale up its LTE roaming partnerships with operators from the US, Canada, the Middle East, Singapore, Japan and Australia in the near future. Globe was first to introduce 4G technology in the Philippines in 2009, and in 2011 was also the first to launch a 4G Evolved High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA+) network in the country. In September, Globe launched its 4G LTE network, which is expanding to cover regions in the NCR, Cebu, Davao and other regions. Globe currently has more than 2,700 4G sites and expects to increase the number to 4,000 or more by the end of the year. Globe launched its $700-million nationwide network modernization program in November 2011 and expects to complete it in the first quarter of 2013. PLDT subsidiary Smart Communications Inc. earlier announced it was negotiating with telecom providers NTT Docomo of Japan, KT Corp. of South Korea, StarHub of Singapore and Hutchinson Telecommunications of Hong Kong for possible LTE roaming partnerships. — BM, GMA News
