Globe-Txtpower talks on new rates break down

Negotiations between Globe Telecom and consumer group Txtpower on Friday collapsed after the two parties failed to reach a compromise on the mobile phone company's new rates on unlimited text messages. Globe presented Txtpower with a P90 for 6 days promo, which the consumer group promptly shot down. Txtpower instead, asked Globe to offer unlimited text at P100 for 10 days. "Txtpower was not amenable to our proposal," Globe Telecom spokesman Jones Campos told GMANews.TV in a phone interview. For its part, the consumer groups said they rejected Globe's final offer because it still constituted a price increase. "We rejected this because it would still mean a price increase. We did not want to give our imprimatur to a price increase," Txtpower spokesman Anthony Ian Cruz said in a separate interview. He added that Txtpower is still pondering its next move. With the collapse of negotiations, the National Telecommunication Commission asked Txtpower to reply to Globe Telecom's petition to dismiss Txtpower's original request. At the start of the month, Txtpower petitioned the NTC to stop Globe's new unlimited text rates. The consumer group claims the new offer, which replaces Globe's 'unlimitxt' service, results in a 100 percent rate increase. From P50 for five days, the rate is now P80 for four days. "The NTC said we could appeal within 10 days. But because the new promo is set to end within 10 days, it might be moot and academic. We don't want to preempt anything with a reply," Cruz said. -GMANews.TV
