Maynilad earmarks P3.2B to plug non-revenue water leaks

Maynilad Water Services Inc. is spending P3.2 billion this year to further reduce non-revenue water (NRW) in its concession area.

The amount is a 45 percent increase from last year's capital expenditure of P2.2 billion, Maynilad said in an e-mailed statement.

Maynilad's increased investment in NRW management program aims to recover more water that can be reallocated for the use of its customers, president and CEO Ricky P. Vargas said.

“In 2014, we have successfully reduced water losses to 33 percent from 35 percent in 2013. This year, we want to do more," he added.

NRW is as the gap between the amount of water put into the distribution system and the amount of water for which customers are actually billed.

It reflects volumes of water being lost through leaks and water not being invoiced or not being accurately measured.

Of the total capex, about P2.1 billion would be dedicated for selective pipe replacement in the of Caloocan, Manila, Parañaque and Cavite.

Another P680 million have been allotted for meter management to improve billing accuracy and reduce meter malfunctions that contribute to commercial losses due to theft and inaccuracies in metering and data handling.

Almost P400 million will be earmarked to establish and maintain District Metered Areas (DMA), allowing  for a more effective monitoring and management of water supply and pressure and an easier identification of leaks through diagnostics, assessment, and leak repair.

Maynilad serves the West Zone of Metro Manila, including the Cities of Manila (except portions of San Andres and Sta. Ana), Caloocan, Pasay, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Valenzuela, Navotas, Malabon and parts of Quezon City and Makati.

It also serves Cavite City, Bacoor City, Imus, Kawit, Noveleta, and Rosario in Cavite province. – Danessa O. Rivera/VS, GMA News
