San Miguel to produce Spam for domestic and export markets

Diversified conglomerate San Miguel Corp. intends to put up a new manufacturing facility to produce the Spam brand luncheon meat in the Philippines.

“We will also manufacture Spam,” San Miguel president and chief operating officer Ramon Ang said.

Producing Spam is part of San Miguel’s expansion program that calls for constructing 18 new facilities for its food and beverage business within the next three years.

The production line for processed meats will have a capacity of 150,000 tons per year.

Ang said the company will make use of a longstanding partnership with Hormel Foods Corp. to manufacture Spam luncheon meat for the local and export markets.

Late last month, Hormel recalled approximately 228,614 pounds of canned pork and chicken products that may have been contaminated with foreign matter, specifically pieces of metal.

Ang said producing the popular luncheon meat locally will ensure product quality.

San Miguel is spending P742 billion on the expansion initiative, which started in 2017. It is expected to be completed by 2019 or 2020. —Ted Cordero/VDS, GMA News
