Alsons Power to supply Mindanao grid 282 MW more in 2016

Alsons Power, the Alcantara Group's development and generation unit focusing on Mindanao, expects to more than double its generating capacity with an additional 282 megawatts (MW) in 2016 after completing three power plant projects in the region.

 

In disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange, the company said it is on-track to produce additional electricity to meet the demand in Mindanao.

 

The additional output will boost Alsons Power's generating capacity by 155 percent to 463 MW by 2016, or equivalent to more than 25 percent of the Department of Energy's projected peak demand of 1,829 MW in Mindanao.

 

Oscar Benedict Contreras III, Alsons Power business unit manager, told GMA News Online the company committed to put up additional capacity for Mindanao which will come from the two plants being built and one under rehabilitation.

 

Contreras said 105 MW of additional power will come from Phase One of Sarangani Energy Corporation (SEC) coal-fired power plant in Maasim, Sarangani which will be completed in 2015.

 

Another 105 MW will come from the San Ramon Power Inc. (SRPI) coal-fired power plant in Zamboanga City, which is expected to come on stream in 2016.

 

“We are just awaiting ERC's (Energy Regulatory Commission) grant of power supply agreement with Zamboanga City Electric Cooperative Inc. We will start construction of the plant by end 2013,” Contreras said.

 

Meanwhile, 72 MW will come from the Iligan bunker-fired diesel power plant of Mapalad Power Corporation (MPC). “We are rehabilitating the power plant for additional capacity. Currently, it's capacity is 26 MW. It will be finished by September of this year,” the company official said.

 

Alsons Power has a present capacity of 181 MW from the revamped 26-MW MPC plant in Iligan City, the 55-MW Southern Philippines Power Corporation plant in Alabel, Sarangani, and the 100-MW Western Mindanao Power Corporation plant in Zamboanga City.
