TUCP now wants daily wages hiked by P334

The Trade Union Congress of the Philippines is set to file on Monday a proposal which would effectively increase the daily wages by P334.

GMA News' "Balitanghali" reported Sunday that the TUCP wants the daily wage in Metro Manila to be hiked by P334 to reach P846 from the current P512.

According to the report, the TUCP cited inflation as the main reason for the proposed hike, as it clocked in at 6.2 percent in the third quarter of the year, the fastest since the 8.3 percent in the second quarter of 2008.

Last June, the TUCP proposed for a P320 increase, citing inflation in the first quarter at 6.2 percent.

Over the weekend, the group said it is planning to revise its P320 wage hike petition to reflect the third-quarter inflation rate.

“Prices of food and costs of services continue to rise since June. So we are crunching the numbers to faithfully reflect the needs of workers and their families to cope with the current 6.2-percent inflation rate," said Associated Labor Unions-TUCP Spokesperson Alan Tanjusay.

"We might amend our first wage hike petition so that the wage board would have a real-time appreciation of realities surrounding the challenges facing workers," he said.

Last September, the Department of Labor and Employment announced a P20 hike in the minimum daily wage in Metro Manila. —Jon Viktor Cabuenas/LBG, GMA News
