BIR: No extension of deadline for filing of income tax returns

As taxpayers started forming long lines on Monday to beat the deadline for the filing of income tax returns (ITR), the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) stressed that there will be no extension of the April 16 deadline.   BIR commissioner Kim Henares said penalties will be imposed on those who will file their ITRs late and those who who will put in wrong information in their tax forms.   "Wala tayong extension but whoever is in line pag nakapila na kayo 5:00 p.m. ie-entertain kayo hanggang matapos ang nakapila," Henares said in an interview over radio dzBB. Henares said those who file their ITRs late may have to pay a surcharge of 25 percent and an interest of 20 percent per annum.   She said there will be banks as well as kiosks in malls that can accept the ITRs.   However, she said some of the banks that will accept ITRs may have an earlier cutoff time because they usually close at 3:00 p.m. BIR personnel at the Quezon City office prepared desks and seats for those filing their ITRs, and set up tax assistance and computation areas to help the filers.   Radio dzBB's Allan Gatus said Henares reported for work early, attending an early morning Mass at the BIR to start the day. - VVP, GMA News
