Is it time for 'London' or loan dito loan doon to make ends meet?


Pinoy consumers could turn to the so-called "Loandon" or loan dito, loan doon as a means to cope with price hike of some commodities, Chino Gaston reported on Saksi on Friday.

Buyers have to shell out a few more pesos to buy commercial rice because the delivery of the cheaper NFA rice has been delayed due to the bad weather.

Nanay Ana Piezon told GMA News said she has to find items that are cheap so she can buy one week's supply of food for her family with her P500-budget.

"Priority ko kasi 'yung nandun talag 'yung nutrition," she said.

Making sure she buys nutritious food is another challenge, as the prices of meat and chicken has gone up too.

Hog and poultry producers are in a quandary over the price hike because farm gate prices remain the same.

The Departments of Trade and Industry and Agriculture are set to implement a suggested retail price for agricultural products but some sellers disagree with the proposal.

"Eh hindi uubra kasi kung pahango sa amin nung garadero eh. Mataas siyempre babawiin naman 'yan diyan may tao pa kami," said a meat vendor.

It can be noted too that the price of whole grain rice is higher by ten pesos at the Kamuning market.

With the price hike, Mega Gabane said she only buy four kilos of rice these days instead of the usual five kilos.

Rice retailer Marideth Cana said the price of rice per sack is higher by more than P300, adding that the increase started in November last year.

The prices of basic commodities, including canned goods are higher by 35 centavos to 95 centavos, according to DTI.

The joint salary of Rodessa Tabula, a teacher, and her husband who is a non-uniformed PNP personnel falls below the P42,000 salary that National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Secretary  Ernesto Pernia said is needed to sustain the needs of a 5-member family.

"Kaya 'pag may emergency, punta ka dito sa London, loan dito loan doon," Tabula said.

If the minimum wage is lower than the amount required to sustain the needs of a family of 5, is it time for a wage hike?

"If we keep increasing minimum wage legislated minimum wage then we'll become even more uncompetitive and also .... mga firms din mga employers they will raise prices of goods and services to be able to cope with higher cost," Pernia said. — BAP, GMA News
