Palace on Alejano's claim: President Duterte has no serious illness

Malacañang on Saturday belied the claim of Rep. Gary Alejano that President Rodrigo Duterte is "seriously ill" and the chief executive's scheduled trip to Israel and Jordan is for "medical treatment" and has nothing to do with OFWs.

Presidential spokesman Harry Roque said, "The President has no serious illness."

"Just this week, we have seen the Chief Executive in his usual fiery self addressing the Conference of the League of Municipalities (LMP) Visayas Island Cluster in Cebu and the 12th Anniversary of the Eastern Mindanao Command in Davao," Roque said in a statement sent to media on Sunday.

Moreover, Roque said "The President has always been forthright about his condition.  What he is experiencing is typical of people of his age."

Likewise, he said that Magdalo Rep. Gary Alejano’s "misinformation is certainly in aid of election. We hope the people will judge him accordingly."

In a forum on Saturday at the University of the Philippines, Diliman Campus in Quezon City, Alejano said, "He (Duterte) is seriously ill. We got our information from someone close to him. Marami tayong mga mata at tainga sa paligid ng presidente."

Also the lawmaker said that the President's planned trip to Israel and China is intended for medical treatment.

In a tweet posted on his Twitter account, Alejano also said the trips have nothing to do with OFWs in those countries but purely for his health condition.

Earlier, Communist Party of the Philippines founding chairman Jose Maria "Joma" Sison said that Duterte is ill and challenged him to reveal his health condition to the public.

In response to Joma, Duterte shared a video tape of him, together with Special Assistant to the President Bong Go, showing he is in the pink of health.

Subsequently, Malacañang came out with statements belying claims that Duterte is ill. —with Virgil Lopez/LBG, GMA News
